“ammarjaved”, based on contents of your reply above, I am assuming that you are a well educated, a literate Pakistani. I would like to assume that in your “clarification” above, you may have good intentions, but it comes across as an attempted diluting of the larger issues outlined by Marvi jee.
Can you for a second forget the “debate for the sake of a debate” and ask yourself… whatever is happening in your Pakistan today, is that your dream Pakistan? Can you imagine where current path of religious fundamentalism leads to? You don’t have to look very far… just look at what happened to Afghanistan 10/15 years ago. Can you imagine your mother/sister/daughter not being able to have any human rights? Can you imagine you or your loved ones being executed in open by likes of Taliban just because you disagreed with them on certain aspects of life? Can you imagine the lawlessness that prevailed north of border just a few short years ago, spreading to entire Pakistan?
One might argue that I am clueless about Pakistan and that’s not how Pakistan is today. And you might be right to some extent when talking about Pakistan in present tense. But just try imagining future of a country where the Governor of the largest province is killed by religious extremists “simply because he suggested a debate on a particular law”??? And mind you, this was not a result of separatist movement like what was the case in the Mrs. Indira Gandhi case. This was simply result of an expression to bring up a healthy debate among lawmakers of your country.
Arguments and debates are good and healthy in most situations. But many times they tend to make you lose sights of a larger cause that Marvi jee is highlighting. You don’t have to agree with everything that she is talking about, but please for God’s sake try to understand what she is genuinely concerned about for her country/her motherland! And if you think you would want to see a better Pakistan tomorrow, put your differences aside for a while and join/support/strengthen her, Ms. Asma Jahangir and others like them in her fight against forces that are trying to kill democracy in your country. Believe me, you will be glad you did! Not just for yourself, but for betterment of your family. You owe this much to your country and your family.
If you choose not to, all I will say is that print a copy of this message and keep it somewhere safe, as it will come in handy for you understand how things got worse and why Pakistan ended up in condition that it would one day be. Please note that I am not taking about any wars with India or any other external enemies (I truly hope that never happens), but its the religious fundamentalism that is eating away your very own Pakistan and its spirits each passing day.

Venus transit between earth and Sun. Venus is almost same size as our mother Earth. This will repeat 102 or so years later, so most of us won’t be around to see the next such event.

After reading yours today column about Quaid e Awam Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Shaheed. I got lot of information about Quaid e Awam behalf of you.
When you wrote Ch. Zahoor Elahi was killed in Quaid e Awam government so I became very sad because you wrote totally wrong for yours readers and tried to make more happy PPP against readers. PPP against readers already are searching bad news about PPP. Because in our politic tolerance has ended unfortunately. It is our bad luck too. In facebook I ready daily all old literature about Jamt e Islami leadership Mulana Madodi when he abused Quaid e Azam Muhammd Ali Jinnah, AIML and Pakistan and JUI leadership Mulana Mufti who used word of “Gunnah” (sin) for Pakistan.
Yes, I am agree with you their was not good all in Quaid e Awam government but he gave opportunities to poor people for this you can read late Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi column which he wrote in Daily Jang in 2004 “Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto – Jo kuch be tha wo aik he tha.”
And yes, I would like to share with you more information also and I hope you will contact with these people and write in yours column too. I read two columns of Munir Ahmed Munir which he wrote in Daily Khabrain about censorship of General Zia and wrote the verses of the Holy Quran were also censored then and other journalist name is Nasir Zai he was given lashes sentence in General Zia era. Nasir Zadi is first person by whom I heard censorship in General Zia and he told then verses of the Holy Quran were censered too.
In last I would like to share with you that when Shar e Awam Habeeb Jalib wrote a poem “zulmat ko zia sar sar ko saba banda ko khuda kaya likhna” so Ch. Zahoor Elahi ordered him cut this verse (misra) “zulmat ko zia” so Shar e Awam replied when I said any distich (shair) so I do not take it back but it becomes public property (amanat).
I got inforatiom via internet about Ch. Zahoor Elahi date of death so got he died on 25 September 1981. I think then he had celebrated Quaid e Awam hang day three times. Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif also celebrated it lot of times but after 12th October 1999 he became realistic and now he does not go Faisal Mosque on 17th August.

Marvi no can do. English is my ardor and decrepitude, I can write brusque English, no stumper, but not to media darling like you. The irony is people with far lesser capacidad and professionalism are writing for major news corps in Pakistan, but alas they cannot publish my articles because I don’t belong so to speak. I questioned Editor of the biggest English daily of Pakistan, why my perfectly well written article was not published by their online edition while utter garbage is regularly printed in the newspaper and on their blog. His response was it is their prerogative. I enquired do you work on your discretion or policy? He went quite, just because I pointed out his use of Mister with my Christian name. How a person with such preposterous and ridiculously inept knowledge of English language can be a) the chief editor of the biggest English Daily in Pakistan, and b) how could he judge or use his discretion for articles written in English rather unfamiliar to him? What about his utter failure to outline their policies, despite persistent enquiries? The sad fact is, if this is the reality of the biggest News Corporation of Pakistan, what should we expect from others?
Just saw your comments about Mehar Bukhari and some other lesser mortals. I say Wow you sure have mastery in colourful language.
I have never engaged with Mehar but have written emails to her husband Kashif, criticising him for his persistent abuse of power by regularly giving free ride to PMLN leaders to tell porkies to Pakistani nation about the assets and incomes of Sharifs’.
Unfortunately, most of Pakistani Journalists leave a bad taste in one’s mouth. You are no exception.
I class you and Hassan Nisar in same category, all froth and no substance. The man is a legend and earning his dough as an “intellectual”. If he is not an oxymoron then who is? Ages ago I challenged him for a written debate on his “knowledge” of history, Islam etc. But self-styled “Aristotle” lost the bottle. Unfortunately in Pakistan “garbage” sells no matter how repugnant some people are, they get a space in the media.

Marvi, again salute to you! Few points here;
1. Some made unnecessary objections about your quotation from Quran, you have mentioned a verse which is perfect and we should follow that verse.
2. You talked about female dress where you further elaborated with an example of sari and bindya, so no-one should assume any other vulgar meaning.
3. 2 Nation theory does not suggest by any means that we must have mullah-backed-terrorised-system; and if it suggests WHY molvis were against its creation?
4. Name of our country was REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN on 14th Aug 1947, not islamic republic of Pakistan.
5. All Pakistanis must accept this reality that Pakistan was not created for any kind of theocratic system. No matter how bitter it is for some people but this is reality.
6. Maulvis and Unionists were totally against creation of Pakistan, but soon after partition all of them pretended they are the actual custodians of nation, in fact they are not at all.
7. Mullahs were happy to live in united india (in secular environment) & against partition, why they cant live peacefully in secular/democratic Pakistan? To be honest, they should not be worried, in fact people with any faith can live freely in secular society. Pakistan should be a country as per vision of its founding fathers.

Good to read your article in Urdu. Please keep writing in Urdu as well as it will be widely understood. Moreover, the right wing has hi jacked Urdu journalism and is further poisoning the minds of ‘bewildered herds’. It is paramount for people like you to write and talk in local languages. I happen to watch your appearances on national channels via Youtube; I must salute your eloquence and courage. Facts, in Pakistan, are distorted rather intolerably rejected. You’re a gem! Hats off!
P.S. Please consider my suggestion of writing regularly in Urdu. I render my services to translate your articles into Urdu voluntarily.

I am not the supporter of Marvi Ji. I just want to ask one thing. Why all the Muslims are leaving Muslim countries and going to western countries for better future of their children? Have you seen any family who came from west and applied/asked for any Muslim country’s nationality? All those who are writing against her would be the first once leaving this great Muslim country (Pakistan) if offered any western nationality.
I compare Islam with Suzuki Mehran :). Everybody rejects Mehran but still people are buying it because of its market value. Islam is just like that. No one wants to follow this religion but everybody want to talk in favour of this because it has a ready-made support in market. You can criticise Christianity in west or even in Muslim countries openly and no one will harm you. But if someone say anything about Islam, which a certain arrogant class perceive as against it, they start calling speaker as a traitor. See what Muslims did to Amam Abu Hanifa after when he injected the idea of logic in Islam. Now we know that we should think logically also.
For people who think Islam is for entire world; I would say its not, its just for people of Arab only. Lunar Calendar ….. we cannot celebrate Eid on same day for God sake.
Btw I used to support Islam on many things like Zakat System and non-interest based economic system etc but I also believe that not everything is right in it. Dont take it as a religion but take it as a guide among many others.

Nice column, I am a Nationalist (without the base of religion, creed, caste) and i see hope in Jinnah as our Founder… I think, an Islamic state can be secular at the same time. as “Islam mei koi Jabber nai”. But this Nationalism can not come until we are united.. Unity can not come until we stop persecution on the basis of religion/race/ethnicity etc. Religion is personnel thing….but on the same time i don’t want a western society. Like being a gay/lesbian is personal thing in west….I don’t like Pakistan to be like that. I am more inclined towards Indian way of managing different religions and there followers. Like Muslim family law. So “No Madar pider Azadi” but azadi within limits of respective religions and regarding atheism (religion cannot be dictated and nor it should be).
